Electroneurography

Rationale
To assess peripheral nerve conduction to assist in the diagnosis of diseases such as diabetic neuropathy and muscular dystrophy.

Patient Preparation
There are no food, fluid, activity, or medication restrictions unless by medical direction.

Normal Findings

• Velocity readings consistent with absence of peripheral nerve injury or disease. Variable readings depend on the nerve being tested and the age of the patient; decreased conduction velocity is usually measured in older patients. Maximum conduction velocity generally averages 50 to 60 m/sec; peripheral nerves of the legs average 40 to 45 m/sec; peripheral nerves of the arms average 50 to 65 m/sec.
