Rationale
To assist in evaluating bone pain, trauma, and abnormalities related to disorders or events such as dislocation, fracture, physical abuse, and degenerative disease.

This Core Diagnostic Study is most commonly ordered to identify fractures; the procedure is noninvasive and results are quickly available for review.

Patient Preparation
There are no food, fluid, activity, or medication restrictions unless by medical direction.

Normal Findings

• Infants and children: Thin plate of cartilage, known as growth plate or epiphyseal plate, between the shaft and both ends.
• Adolescents and adults: By age 17 yr, calcification of cartilage plate; no evidence of fracture, congenital abnormalities, tumors, or infection.
