A enzyme that can be guided to cut and edit specific sequences of DNA. It is a biochemical tool originally identified in bacteria which use it for self-defense against viral and other infections. It is used in genetic engineering (genome editing) to identify and remove disease-causing DNA sequences. CRISPR is an acronym for “clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats.”
