Synonym/Acronym:
Profibrinolysin, PMG, tissue plasminogen activator antigen, tPA antigen.

Rationale
To assess thrombolytic disorders such as rapidly developing disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), assess thrombotic or slowly developing DIC, and monitor thrombolytic therapy.

Patient Preparation
There are no food, fluid, activity, or medication restrictions unless by medical direction.

Normal Findings
Method: Chromogenic for plasminogen activity and enzyme-linked immunosorbent for plasminogen activator antigen.

Plasminogen activity70%–150% of normal
Plasminogen (tPA) antigenLess than 15 ng/mL
Plasminogen activity in newborns is half of adult ranges.
