1. The recipient of an advanced degree, e.g., doctor of medicine (MD), doctor of osteopathy (DO), doctor of philosophy (PhD), doctor of science (DSc), doctor of nursing science (DNS), doctor of dental medicine (DMD), doctor of education (EdD), or doctor of divinity (DD).
2. One who, after graduating from a medical, veterinary, or dental school, successfully passes an examination and is licensed by a state government to practice medicine, veterinary medicine, or dentistry.
