Aedes
(ā″ē′dēz″)
[Gr. aēdēs, unpleasant]
A genus of mosquitoes belonging to the family Culicidae. Many species are troublesome pests, and some transmit disease.
Aedes aegypti
An aggressive species that feeds during daylight hours and can transmit common viral illnesses including chikungunya fever, dengue, and yellow fever.
Aedes albopictus
A species that was initially endemic in South East Asia and the Pacific Islands but has spread to Central and North America and is a vector of several tropical diseases, including dengue and chikungunya viral infections.
Aedes triseriatus
A species that transmits Jamestown Canyon virus, La Crosse virus, and other California encephalitis viruses.
