Gastroesophageal Reflux Scan
General
Core DX Study
Synonym/Acronym:
aspiration scan, GER scan, GERD scan, milk scan (pediatric patients).
Rationale
To assess for gastric reflux in relation to heartburn, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and aspiration.
This Core Diagnostic Study is mostly used to investigate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is estimated to affect 20% to 30% of people in the United States; prevalence and the possibility of lifelong disease if left undiagnosed make the GER scan helpful in supporting a diagnosis of GERD when considered along with a patient’s self-reported symptoms.
Patient Preparation
There are no food, fluid, activity, or medication restrictions unless by medical direction.
Normal Findings
- Reflux less than or equal to 4% across the esophageal sphincter.
Critical Findings and Potential Interventions
