About the Webinar

Transitioning from clinical practice to the simulation lab involves a steep learning curve that goes far beyond mastering the technology. For new faculty, the challenge lies in moving past the equipment to focus on the teaching strategies that actually drive student success. This practical conversation is designed to help novice simulationists build a solid foundation. It discusses how to cut through the noise of high-tech "bells and whistles" and focus on creating structured, high-impact environments where students can safely develop clinical judgment.

Webinar Summary

Healthcare simulation is no longer just “mannequins in a lab,” but a structured, evidence‑based teaching method guided by the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP). In this webinar, “A Conversation About Best Practices in Healthcare Simulation: Novice to Competent,” an expert simulationist and a novice meet to make those standards concrete and approachable.

Why the Standards Matter
The INACSL HSSOBP were presented as the “north star” for simulation: a common framework that keeps experiences ethical, consistent, and focused on clinical reasoning and patient safety. Recent updates elevate psychological safety, transparent prebriefing, and intentional facilitation—pushing programs beyond “cool technology” toward measurable learner outcomes.

Prebriefing, Debriefing, and Facilitation
Prebriefing was framed as the tone‑setter: clarify roles, review the fiction contract and confidentiality, orient learners to the space, and explicitly state the Basic Assumption. Debriefing was described as the primary learning engine. Using a structured model, facilitators guide students to examine their decisions, emotions, and clinical judgment rather than just listing errors. Finally, facilitation ties it all together in real time with cues and when to stay silent, maintaining psychological safety, fidelity, and fairness across cohorts.

The practical takeaway is clear: if your simulation is grounded in objectives, strong prebriefing, reflective debriefing, and ethical facilitation, you are aligned with best practice—regardless of your experience level or technology budget.
