(pe″trŏ-lāt′ŭm )

[ petroleum + -ate ]
A purified semisolid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. This occlusive substance is used as a base for ointments. It is not suitable for use as a vaginal lubricant because it is not miscible in body secretions.
