[ sterilize ]

1. Complete removal or destruction of microorganisms from an object, e.g., with steam heat, dry heat, chemicals, radiation, or ultraviolet light.
2. A permanent form of birth control that can be accomplished, for example, by surgical removal of the testes or ovaries (castration) or by tying off or removing a portion of the reproductive ducts (the ductus deferens in men; the fallopian tubes in women).
