[ pharyng- + -itis ]
Inflammation of the mucous membranes and lymphoid tissues of the pharynx, usually as a result of infection.

CAUSES
The disease typically is caused by viral or bacterial infections, including influenza, SARS-CoV2, Streptococcus pyogenes, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS
The predominant symptom is throat pain. Fever, malaise, muscle aches, and painful swallowing are often present.

DIAGNOSIS
Swabs taken from the posterior pharynx are often used to identify the specific cause of the disease.

TREATMENT
Directed therapies (e.g., antibiotics or antiviral drugs) are used when specific causes are identified. Gargling with warm salty water, using throat lozenges, or pharyngeal anesthetics provides additional symptomatic relief.
