Inflammation and thickening of the first metatarsal joint of the great toe, usually associated with marked enlargement of the joint and lateral displacement of the toe.

ETIOLOGY
Bunions may be caused by heredity, degenerative bone or joint diseases such as arthritis, but most often are produced by tight-fitting shoes and high heels that force toes together and displace weight onto the forefoot.
