[L. alcohol, fr Arabic al-kuh'l, powdered antinomy, distillate]
1. A class of organic compounds that are hydroxyl derivatives of hydrocarbons.
2. Ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH), a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid. Its molecular weight is 46.07; its boiling point is 78.5°C. It is present in fermented or distilled liquors and is obtained, in its pure form, from grain by fermentation and fractionation distillation.
