[actino- + Gr. mykēs, mushroom, fungus] A genus of bacteria of the family Actinomycetaceae that contains gram-positive staining filaments. These bacteria usually cause disease in the cervicofacial (lumpy jaw), thoracic, and abdominal areas of humans.
