[L. inversio, to turn inward]

1. The reversal of a normal relationship.
2. A turning inside out of an organ, e.g., the uterus.
3. In chemistry, the process of converting sucrose (which rotates the plane of polarized light to the right) into a mixture of dextrose and levulose (which rotates the plane to the left). The resulting mixture is called invert sugar, and the enzyme that catalyzes this conversion is called invertase.
