pl. gingivae [L. gingiva, gum (in the mouth)]
The tissue that surrounds the necks of the teeth and covers the alveolar processes of the maxilla and mandible; the gums. The gingiva can be divided into three regions: the gingival margin, free gingiva, and attached gingiva. Normal gingival tissue is pale coral pink, firm, and resilient. The attached gingiva is stippled, the gingival margin and free gingiva are not.
