1. The process of making a fixed part movable or releasing stored substances, as in restoring motion to a joint, freeing an organ, or making available substances held in reserve in the body as glycogen or fat.
2. In physical therapy and rehabilitation, getting a patient out of bed to ambulate.
3. In an emergency such as a mass casualty, making resources available to respond to or support disaster relief.
