[L. effusio, a pouring out, shedding]
Escape of fluid into a part, such as the pleural cavity, as by empyema (pus), hydrothorax (serum), hemothorax (blood), chylothorax (lymph), pneumothorax (air), hydropneumothorax (serum and air), and pyopneumothorax (pus and air).
