A thermometer that gauges body temperature from the axilla, the oral cavity, the temporal artery, or the tympanic membrane.

recording thermometer

A device with a suitable sensor that continuously monitors and records temperature.

rectal thermometer

A thermometer with a round bulb that is inserted into the rectum for determining body temperature.

self-registering thermometer

A thermometer recording variations of temperature.

spirit thermometer

A thermometer filled with alcohol for registering low temperatures.

surface thermometer

A thermometer for indicating the temperature of the body's surface, used in infant warmers.

temporal artery thermometer

An electronic thermometer that uses infrared technology to measure the temperature in a major artery, e.g., the temporal artery.

tympanic thermometer

A thermometer that determines the temperature electronically by measuring it from the tympanic membrane of the ear.
