ABBR: DHHS, HHS The U.S. agency that administers federal health programs, including the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The National Institutes of Health, Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start, and health care reform. The department was called the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare until the U.S. Department of Education was established (1979).
