Examination by application of the hands or fingers to the surface of the body to detect evidence of disease or abnormalities in the internal organs. For example, in obstetrics, it is a technique used to evaluate fetal presentation and position; frequency, duration, and strength of uterine contractions; status of membranes; cervical effacement and dilation; and fetal station.
