[osteo- + -pathy]
1. Any bone disease.
2. A system of medicine historically based on the theory that disease is caused by impaired functional integrity and is restored by manipulation. Contemporary osteopaths rely much more heavily on the use of medications and surgery than upon body adjustments. Osteopathy is recognized as a standard method or system of medical and surgical care. Physicians with a degree in osteopathy use the designation DO.
