[paraganglion + -oma]
An extra-adrenal tumor composed of neural crest cells. The cells may release catecholamines into the systemic circulation and cause symptoms of sustained or episodic hypertension, with sweating, palpitations, and headache. Paragangliomas usually are found in the paravertebral ganglia or the carotid bodies.
