[L. homo, stem homin-, human being, man]
A genus of primates of the family Hominidae. The sole existing species is humankind, Homo sapiens. Evidence from fossils indicates extinct species (such as H. habilis, H. erectus, H. australopithecus). Most biologists classify Neanderthals as the species H. neanderthalensis, but a minority consider them to be a subspecies of H. sapiens (H. sapiens neanderthalensis.)
