SYMB: Au A yellow metallic chemical element, atomic weight (mass) 196.967, specific gravity 19.32, atomic number 79. Its salts have been used to treat early rheumatoid arthritis not adequately controlled by other anti-inflammatory agents or conservative therapy. Injection of radioactive gold, 198Au, is used to treat certain types of cancer and to help outline certain organs, as in liver scanning.
