CH50
A laboratory test that assesses the integrity of the entire complement system. It measures the ability of a patient's serum complement, when activated, to destroy sheep red blood cells. Diminished activity may prompt further testing, e.g., for levels of terminal complement components, for levels of C3 and C4, or for diseases in which antigen-antibody complexes circulate in the blood.
