One who is professionally trained to use ultrasound with other available clinical information to obtain images of anatomical structures, physiological processes, and disease states for diagnostic purposes. In the U.S., professional societies of sonographers include the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and the American Society of Echocardiography. Professionally certified sonographers are credentialed by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
